One reason for favoring the constructive approach is that bottom-up (datadriven) theories of perception do not fully explain context effects. Context effects are the influences of the surrounding environment on perception. For example, participants might see a scene of a kitchen followed by stimuli such as a loaf ofbread, a mailbox, and a drum. The loaf of bread will be recognized more rapidly thanobjects that are inappropriate to the context. The strength of the context also plays a role in object recognition.
