This is a series of minute nicks along a facet junction. An abrasion gives the junction a fuzzy appearance. Diamonds are the hardest mineral on earth and score a 10 on Mohs scale of hardness. Hard is here defined as the resistance to be scratched: Only a diamond can scratch a diamond, which is why diamonds are used to polish other diamonds. It is also why abrasion occurs. Abrasions are caused by wear as a result of people handling and storing the diamonds carelessly which makes the diamonds rub against each other. Another cause for abrasions is when one diamond rubs against another in a stone paper. These diamonds may be referred to as “paper worn” diamonds.
