Crime Suppression Division police on Tuesday arrested a woman with 89 fake US$100 notes while she was about to exchange them for Thai baht at a bank in Bangkok's Prawes district.
The arrest followed a complaint to the CSC by the Thai Bankers Association that the woman, identified as Kesthip Sae Lee or Sunisa Tai, 48, the owner of a plastics factory, had earlier exchanged US$19,900 for about 700,000 baht with that bank.
The bank staff found later discovered the dollar notes were counterfeit.
The CSD laid down a plan to arrest the woman. She was nabbed when she showed up at the bank again on Tuesday morning with $8,900 in fake notes to exchange for Thai baht.
Accolrding to police, Ms Kesthip admitted she had exchanged dollars four times previously at the same bank. She claimed to have received the money from Chinese people who bought amulets from her, but was unaware the dollar notes were counterfeit. She said the notes were apparently brought into the country by the Chinese in early November from Beijing, China.
Pol Col Panthana Nuchanart, deputy CSD commander, said the fake banknotes looked very much like real notes. He warned people who received $100 notes issued in 2003-2004 to check carefully check whether they are real.
The CSC would co-ordinate with Chinese authorities in the investigation, he said.
