There are large differences in microclimate between south-and
north-facing slopes resulting from exposure to solar radiation and
consequent effectsontemperatureregime.Forreasonsofpro-
ductivity, southfacingslopesaregenerallyfavoredinnorthern
and avoidedinsouthernlatitudes.Atlowlatitudes,highaltitudes
provide coolerlocations,notingthatmeantemperaturedecreases
by 0.5–0.6 ◦C foreach100mincreaseinelevation.
