These additional costs beyond ISO 50001 are included in the data collected from the
nine facilities. For the same facility, the costs of implementing SEP will be higher than
achieving ISO 50001 compliance alone. However, this study represents the best analysis
of the costs and energy savings attributed to implementing an energy management
system that meets the international standard.
Sixty-seven percent of the costs are associated with internal staff time to implement
the system. This cost estimate is consistent with the time estimates for implementing
previous ISO standards, ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 full time equivalents, depending upon
the complexity of the organization.
