In addition to the information gained from the questionnaire, volunteer feedback from students
was collected during course development for Safety in Process Design in the form of plotted
‘Learning and Understanding’ curves by Karjalainen (1999). Students were asked to evaluate
their learning experience with respect to time after every lesson by drawing their learning curve
and adding brief commentary to explain significant curve changes (at the cusp points). Figure 2
is an example of one of these curves. These plotted curves were introduced in the third year of
