Looking back
It is said that when Buddha entered the rain retreat at Jetavana in Savatthi (Sracasti) monks separated themselves from one another to enter the rains retreat at the temple in July. They were afraid that they might develop differences and would continue to argue during the three months’ retreat. So they set the regulation that they would not converse with one-another but at the end of retreat they met the Buddha at Jetavana and reported their deeds. The Buddha blamed them for living like a flock of animals and performed the “Pavarana.” While addressing the monks the Buddha said :
