The architecture for the expert system and the
framework for the state estimator have been designed with
ongoing work continuing those efforts. In developing the
computer models for predicting remaining life of
distribution equipment. we chose to begin with
transformers and insulators. Thermal, electrical. and
acoustic aging indicators have been identified and a
preliminary mathematical model has been developed. In
addressing the insulators. we aim to model the aging
performance due to wear and contamination. We have
performed preliminary field experiments to begin
compiling a database of information on the behavior of
contaminated and damaged insulators pre-. during, and postflashover.
The computer models for the remaining
components of the FDPM are in the design phase.
