Malaria
In Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria co-infection with sepsis is common in children. In a study of over 3000 children in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania with febrile illnesses, 57% were found to have malarial infection. In another study of children with malaria, 6% had concomitant invasive bacterial infection along with associated increased mortality. In adults, however, the co-infection rate is less clear, with a recent study of septic adults in Uganda, a malaria-endemic area, demonstrating a malarial prevalence of only 4%.
