In soccer, most information about injuries comes from the
professional level. These investigations usually contain
records from injuries recorded in elite soccer players during
a single year (eg, 1 soccer season), which limits the study sample
to several professional teams playing domestic and international
matches. However, there is limited information
about the injury rate in amateur soccer players, despite their
accounting for more than 99% of the total number of soccer
players in the world. Previous data34,37,40,43 indicate that the
rate of injuries in amateur soccer players is lower than their
elite counterparts probably because of poorer physical conditions
and soccer skills.6 The aim of this research was to investigate
the injury types and injury rates among Spanish male
amateur soccer players during an entire soccer season. A second
purpose was to investigate the influence of the player’s
age on the injury types and rates in the amateur soccer population.
Information was obtained based on the F-MARC document
to facilitate a comparison with other investigations.
