While it is always in our own interests to reason at the highest level of which we are capable , it may not be in our best interests to make moral judgments at the hightest level. Some people who are capable of judging morally at stage 6 may not do so because they do not wish to end up as martyrs as did Socrates, Lincoln, and martin luther king, jr. so a youth may have the concepts of stages 5 or 6 but not use them habitually because they do not seem worth the trouble or the risk in his particular social setting . thus a portion of the slippage between cognitive level and moral stage may be accounted for by the operation of a girl’s or boy emotions, desires , or willpower. However, Kohlberg felt that this factor of will plays only a minor part in determining judgment stages. The other three factors in the quartet of influences are far more important.
