The nature ofBains business demands personalized learning, a burden shared by both the organization and the individual At Bain, personalized learning is valued over codified learning. "Looking at how management consultants use technology," Tierney says, "you can think of a computer database as a storehouse ofinformation and accumulated corporate experience. The consultant uses his computer to access this database warehouse. This is codified learning. And it is a weakness of current approaches to Knowledge Management. These approaches focus on systems, and not on interactions between people, where learning really takes place." Tierney contrasts codified learning with personalized learning. "We prefer personalized learning. This means that our consultants use computers and other electronic media to communicate knowledge, not store it. We think computers exist to create 'learning moments,' to facilitate dialogue and conversation, to get us talking and to add value to our interaction.
