Poole’s Contingency model (1983) states that groups will employ a
different set of sequences based on a number of “contingency” variables, such as
the composition of the group, the structure and potentially changing structure of
the task, the cultural environment, and conflict management strategies. Poole’s
model identified three focused tracks for the group (task progress, relation, and
topical focus) and that the group will jump back and forth between these three
tracks (breakpoints). The task track is those activities that are performed in direct
relation to completing the task. The relationship track is those set of activities
that address the interpersonal relationships among group members. The topic
track acknowledges that groups will need to address complementing off-task
topics over time.
