I can't believe my tweet has gone so viral. There's been a lot of positive feedback and also some negative backlash, but I'm gonna stick to my guns: your accent in your native language doesn't change after being abroad for just a few years. First language attrition is definitely a real thing, but there are many Thais who change their Thai accents and act like they've forgotten Thai within just a few months of being abroad. There are also many Thais who do this and they've never been abroad at all. Everybody knows it's an act, even the people who are doing it. Whatever. To each his own, I guess. That being said, I know numerous Thais who have been abroad for ten plus years, speak excellent English, and still speak Thai with the same accent.
