Thailand has not only political and economic crisis, but also a crisis in education too.
Instructors in the science and technology fields have encountered a common problem which they never had before. More students in areas such as engineering and science fail to earn their bachelor degrees.
Many desire to quit in the first year. The average rate of those students who drop out or are forced to retire from the courses is between 15% and 20%, far beyond the acceptable rate of 5%
Therefore, university lecturers are trying to deal with this serious problem and pay immediate attention to solve it before the dropout rate increases. Some point to the university admission system as the important cause of the problem. They are right.
For many years, officials at the Higher Education Commission and Basic Education Commission at the Education Ministry have tried to find the best way to ensure fairness for senior secondary students going on to university.
In the past, the university entrance examination was simple. Students obtaining the highest scores in the test get the best chance to sit in faculties they choose according to their priority. Every subject had a score of 100. Those wanting to study science and technology could concentrate on subjects such as mathematics, physics and chemistry. Students aiming to go into the social sciences sat only social science tests.
People opposing this formula said the entrance exam was unfair for all students, especially those not in famous secondary schools. The school standard was different and it was in favor of schools in cities, most of them in Bangkok.
