The 14q deletions in kidney cancer are typically very large
and usually span HIF1α, as noted above. Nonetheless, rare
tumors with small deletions had pinpointed 14q31-ter as the
likely location for a kidney cancer tumor suppressor gene (23,
27, 28). The simplest reconciliation of these findings would
be the existence of multiple kidney cancer tumor suppressor
genes on 14q, in addition to HIF1α, with perhaps some
acting through haploinsufficiency. Alternatively, these small
