These types of non-formal educational programs are relevant because they can effectively promote
scientific interest, and students who demonstrate an interest in science are more likely to study
science in college and choose a scientific career. Gibson and Chase (2002) found that middle school
students who participated in a science camp reported increased interest in science relative to peers
who did not participate. Markowitz (2002) found that many high school students who participated in
a summer science program showed increased improvement in science performance and indicated an
enhanced interest in pursuing a career in science. Additionally, according to Markowitz, many of the
program participants who developed an interest in science went on to select a science major in
college.
