This present research demonstrates the potential that even a limited SSI
classroom may have in terms of promoting students’ communication skills in
the context of their regular science class. In our study, the SSI forum created an
atmosphere whereby students operated freely by expressing their ideas and
feelings about delicate topics as well as by sharing their personal experiences
and values related to those issues. Students also naturally checked with each
other, particularly while working in small groups, to determine if they
