Calcein (Cambridge Bioscience)
was dissolved in seawater at a concentration of 500 mg/L, with pH
adjusted to 8.1 using 1 M NaOH in an aerated aquarium.
Individuals
were immersed in this solution in individual compartments for 72 h,
and were returned to holding tanks following immersion.
Over a
5 month period following calcein immersion, 40 individuals molted
(26 male and 14 female).Eight individuals (6 male and 2 female)
were sacrificed (by placing in a − 80 °C freezer for 15 min) within
24 h of molting.

premolt, when molting was estimated to occur within 24 h, indicated
by: a lack of feeding
