THE Brunei contingent under the 11th International Monitoring Mission (IMT) safely returned home yesterday after successfully completing a 12-month tour of duty in Mindanao, Philippines.
A welcoming ceremony was held for the eight Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) personnel and one Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) member, who were deployed on September 5 last year.
Family members alongside RBAF Commander Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Seri Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih Abdullah greeted their arrival at the Rimba Air Base.
Leading the Brunei contingent was Lieutenant Colonel Hj Huzaimi Pehin Datu Harimau Padang Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Husin.
Sharing their experiences, Lt Col Hj Huzaimi described his tour in Mindanao as “challenging” especially in terms of safety.
He explained that the contingent coordinated with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Government of the Philippines in the task of conflict resolution.
While IMT was tasked with observing and advising residents within troubled areas, he said it was the responsibility of the government unit to resolve issues.
Lt Col Hj Huzaimi also revealed that during their year-long tour, the operation saw an exchange of open fires between the Philippine police commandos and the Islamic separatists, MILF whereby a total of 44 Philippine National Police Special Action Force were lost.
“It was a complicated incident whereby the police force were actually trying to capture the extremists but unfortunately it was in the area of the MILF.
“There is an agreement between the government and the MILF whereby if there are any such operation to be conducted in specific areas, it should be coordinated but unfortunately that wasn’t coordinated and a few lives were lost,” the contingent leader explained.
He said most of the operations involved missions to affected areas with the aim of uncovering reasons that triggered such conflicts.
“There is a mechanism and a proper procedure before entering the affected areas. We don’t go there when there is gunfire,” he said, adding that he along with his team would be guided throughout.
Meanwhile, Assistant Superintendant of Police (ASP) Hj Mohd Termizi Dr Hj Mohd Yusop, the sole representative of the RBPF in the contingent, said among the challenges they faced was being away from family.
Despite the challenges, he said the experience gained during the tour has been valuable, vowing to use it to further progress in his career.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the RBAF IMT operation as a supporting force is a significant milestone, one that reflects “the important commitment of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s government in continuing its contribution to the peace and security of neighbouring states”.
Also in attendance at the arrival ceremony were Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Datin Paduka Hjh Suriyah Hj Umar, Deputy Commander of RBAF, First Admiral Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz Hj Mohd Tamit, Acting Commissioner of Police DCP Hj Mohd Jammy Hj Muhd Shah Al-Islam, Ambassador Designate of the Philippines to Brunei Darussalam Meynardo LB Montealegre, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam, Datuk Awg Sahak Awg Salleh, Directors and Senior Officers.
