Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the world according to researchers. What exactly is it about Marijuana that people love so much? It is no secret that people around the world of all ages and backgrounds love to get high...but why?
This question prompted me to research not only what causes the euphoric feeling cannabis provides users, but also how this has changed over time.
A chemical commonly referred to as THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is what gives users the sensation of being "high". Without getting too in depth, this chemical causes 'receptors' to fire in your brain altering it's physical and chemical balance.
It quickly became clear that the potency of Marijuana strains around the world have been increasing over the years. Tests on seized cannabis crop have revealed that the amount of THC in samples has nearly tripled since 1985.
Another study conducted by the Home Office Scientific Development Branch reported even higher levels of THC concentration in samples. The mean THC concentration (potency) of the cannabis samples was 16.2% (range = 4.1 to 46%). Compared to an average of less than 4% potency around 20 years ago, it is safe to say that this is not the same pot your parents were smoking.
Advances in cultivating techniques and materials seem to be the main reason for the explosive growth of THC levels in marijuana. Not necessarily because it is now easier than ever to transport the drug, but because the goods required to grow the crop is more accessible than ever. Globalization connects the world in one big web. Fertilizers produced in more advanced countries are bought by people in less developed areas where the crops are usually grown. In this way, globalization has caused a side effect most people would probably have never considered...pot is more potent that ever!
