In order to determine the occurrence and
nature of pigmented lesions on the skin of
newborn babies, 1,058 infants were examined in
the first 48 hours of age. In performing these
examinations all types of birthmarks seen were
recorded. This report presents the statistical
results of these observations.
A search of the literature reveals only one
previous report on the incidence of the various
types of birthmarks found on examination of
newborn infants.’ In this study of 1,096 neonates,
Pratt reported the incidence of mongolian spots,
strawberry marks, and pigmented nevi, but did
not differentiate the various pigmented lesions or
confirm the type by biopsy (Table I).
