Our first goal is to design training that enables people to learn
knowledge and skills new to them and to transfer that knowledge
and skill to active classroom practice—and thus identify principles
for designing programs that will result in a high level of skill and its
implementation. Our second goal is to search for ways of conducting
training that increases the aptitude of faculties to learn skills
more easily and effectively. In other words, we want to design training
that allows people to learn to be more effective learners. This
chapter is oriented around those two goals. During the discussion
we will often use effect sizes (standard deviation units) to make
comparisons between treatments more clear.
