Another word on the self (individual) in Confucianism.
It is commonly said that in Confucianism the wellbeing of the community always overrides the individual.
While there is some validity to that assessment, the self is important in the sense that it must cultivate relationships, which is central to Confucian thinking.
So the transformation of the individual into a better person is not about self-control in isolation, nor about just following the wishes of the community.
Rather it is about being internally sincere and externally reflecting that in positive relationships.
