What a great week for Thailand! First the Thai Women's Team triumphed in the Asian Volleyball Championship. Then today (as I learned from reading the Bangkok Post), the government has junked the Royal Irrigation Department's plans for a reservoir inside Mae Wong National Park, a critical component of Thailand's superb Western Forest Complex, which is one of the most important areas in all of Asia for tiger conservation. Thai NGOs, and especially the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation, deserve plaudits for their campaign, which galvanized public opposition to the dam.
