The pH values in the study area vary from 6.8 to 8.6
suggesting alkaline nature of the groundwater. The
electrical conductivity values were found to vary
between 700μmhos/cm to 4200μmhos/cm. Physical and
chemical parameters including minimum, maximum and
average concentrations are shown in Table 2. The major
ions are in the order Na+>Ca2+>Mg2+>K+ = HCO3-
>Cl->SO42->NO3->CO32-. High concentration of
sodium and calcium in groundwater is due to
weathering of silicate minerals. The lower
concentration of potassium is, however, due to its
greater resistance to weathering and its fixation in the
formation of clay minerals. Bicarbonate is the dominant
anion in this region.
