The economy is mainly agrarian. The main crops are rice, wheat, barley, maize, millet, potatoes and oranges. Bhutan
used to be self sufficient is cereal and also had a small surplus available for export to Tibet which was traded for items
such as salt and wool. The closure of the Tibetan border has to some extent destroyed the incentive for the production of
the surplus as the plains of India are:
(a)Too far for economic export, and
(b)Traditional market for export of Bhutan's surplus cereal do not exist.
