Digital technologies are already in widespread use in
the book publishing industry.Although frequently
criticized for its reluctance to adopt new ideas and
technologies,book publishing has successfully negotiated
through centuries of technological change. To some
informed observers indeed, not only are technology andpublishing synonymous today, but also it is technology
and technology-based solutions rather than content that
will determine success and survival in the
industry.Despite doubts over its practicality, the
Semantic Web is now well established in a range of
industries from telecommunications and health care to
pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Much more exciting
and in ways a logical evolution from Web 2.0 as the
Semantic—Social Web is the case for aligning Web 3.0
with concepts such as the Internet of Things and
Augmented Reality. The ultimate goal is that of a global
Web of semantically related resources, that in theory
could comprise all the knowledge in the world,
accessible through a complex of autonomic systems that
would for all intents and purposes behave like humans .
The future of the book publishing will involve a
significant transformation from the process as we know it
today. Publishers will need to keep an open mind as to
the direction they wish to travel, as there will be many
format options available to them. Advanced Web
technology will not only provide avenues of opportunity,
but also associated pitfalls that need to be avoided . With
the advent of a kaleidoscope of technology, the role of
publishers will undergo dramatic changes which will
challenge their skills to remain at the forefront of an
industry in which potentially everybody will be
empowered to become their own publisher.
