A summary of the demographic and clinical characteristics of
the patients is shown in Table 1. Eight patients (four males,
four females; mean age 49.4; range 22 to 73) belonged to
subgroup A and six patients to subgroup B (two males, four
females; mean age 37.0; range 18 to 58). No significant
differences in the time to DTI scanning after onset were
observed between the subgroups (subgroup A: mean
9.7 months, range 2 to 23 months; subgroup B: mean
6.6 months, range 2 to 21 months) and age. The median value
on the GCS score was 15.0 for group A and 6.0 for group B
(Table 2) [30, 31]. In detail, the patients in subgroup B showed
partial preservation of eye opening (2.5), best verbal response
(1.0), and best motor response (2.5) (Table 2). All patients in
subgroup B corresponded to the impaired arousal and minimally
conscious state [32].

have reported on DTI findings of HI-BI in patients with an
adult brain [11, 13, 22–25]. Most of these studies
