In 1990,a Lisu man moved to Hua Fai and rented a house there. Born in Mea Chan district, Chiang Rai province, he and his family had to move once before to escape the turmoil caused by communist insurgency, government troops, and local mafia, to a village in Mae Taeng district, Chiang Mai province. There he grew rice and maize, while his wife did sewing and embroidery for sale. He found that while his agriculture income was falling because of the pressure on land availability and rising input costs, his wife’s income was increasing. Then an Akha man to asked him to go into the city and sell old ethnic objects at the Night Bazaar. He sold his piece of land in Mae Taeng, and used the money obtained to buy wood carvings and traditional objects to sell to tourist. He rented a space in the Night Bazaar to sell those objects and a house in Hua Fai for his accommodation.
