As you learn about the Six Early Literacy Skills it becomes easier to spot great books that support infant and pre-schoolers learning. You also learn that most any high quality children's book can be used to support the development of one or more the skills.
Some shortcuts for finding great books
The book covers on this page take you directly into our catalogue where you can place a hold on books to support the Six Early Literacy Skills. Many titles on this list are taken from Melissa Depper's document The 6 Early Literacy Skills in Books for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers.
Another great list is Star Books: For Kids and Caregivers, From Librarians - Hennepin County Library. (Tip: if you type in any of the Six Early Literacy Skills - for example, "print awareness" - into their search box you will get a list of books to support that skill.)
To find other great titles browse the shelves of your local Library branch with a copy (Library branches have copies too) of the pamphlet Early Literacy at Winnipeg Public Library (get the French version here) which tells you the Six Early Literacy Skills.
As always, don't hesitate to ask Library staff for help.
