2. The Biofuels Directive of the
European Union (EU) Commission
requests the use of 5.75%
biofuels by 2010, and 20% by
2020.
However, the use of agricultural
areas for growing of bioenergy
plants will compete with the production
of food and animal feedstocks,
and to reach the EU Commissions
goal of 5.75% of biofuels,
it is estimated that up to 13% of the
EUs total agricultural area would
be required. This means there is a
strong political dimension in relation
to the future application of
bioenergy plants.
