While pure project and functional organizations represent extremes of the organization spectrum, matrix organization cover a wide range in between. When the PM of a matrix –organized project has considerable command authority over the project, it is said to be a strong matrix. If the PM is subject to extensive control by functional manager, the matrix is said to be weak. There is, therefore, a great deal of flexibility in precisely how the project is organized – all within the basic matrix structure – so that it can be adapted to a wide variety of projects, some of which might require strong support from functional heads and some of which might have PMs more or less ready to assume full control.
