When I was small, I was in my grandparents' pool, and let go of the edge of the pool to see what would happen. I sunk towards the bottom of the pool, found the shimmering walls of water and soundlessness beautiful. I remember thinking about rain, and raincoats and rubber boots. I swear I saw a little boy wearing a raincoat and boots down there with me. My grandmother noticed what I had done, and pulled me out of the water. I don't remember being hurt or scared in the least, which is funny, because later on, as I was being taught to swim, I did not trust the life jacket to hold me, and would not let go of the edge of the pool. :) I also know someone who almost drowned while bodyboarding. The undercurrent pulled them out, and he was afraid, since he was going so far, and no one was around at nighttime, that he was surely going to die. Luckily, he did fight his way back to shore, and vomited up a lot of seawater, and even sand crabs.
