A unique situation that can occur is the value stream with no control point at all. When you map a value stream with such a condition, it can become very difficult to show exactly what is happening. The customer may or may not also be the supplier; it really does not matter. It is a challenge to accurately show such a situation without confusing the educated value-stream audience. If your audience has seen Current State Maps before, they will begin to ask questions about the
missing control point. If you place the customer or supplier icon too close to the middle, it may be misinterpreted as the control point. Therefore, these maps, like the one shown in Figure 14.6, require a great deal of explanation from the mapper. When value streams like this exist, the natural inclination of the employees working in the process will almost always be an absolute certainty that there is.
nothing controlling the process. They believe that the value stream just operates
on its own with no one in control.
