An open-ended, semi-structured interview guide was used to stimulate discussion of each participant’s transition experience, without directing him/her to specific answers or meanings. Subsequent questions were driven by their responses, which facilitated additional probing into the meaning of the transition. All interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. Participatory dialogue techniques were used and included: active listening; openness to what the participant was saying; continual reflection on what the participant’s words meant;and, how the participant had formed his/her particular point of view and accepted it for what it was.
