T
he process of delivering intravenous (IV) drugs
and fluid to patients requires the selection of the
appropriate IV access device, infusion pump and
associated consumables. Knowledge about device
type, compatibilities, infusion pump features, settings and
controls are essential for all nurses to ensure the correct
application and to maintain therapeutic efficacy.
Maintaining the prescribed levels of medication in the
‘therapeutic window’ is vital to ensure that dangerous (toxic)
levels are avoided.Furthermore,if IV medications are delayed,
the dose incorrectly calculated, interrupted or not managed
throughout the entire infusion, then the opposite effect
of a ‘sub-therapeutic’ dose will be administered (Figure 1).
Awareness of legislation, national guidance and local policy
also inform the nurse of his or her role in order to address
any limitations in practice and seek help when needed
