Adaptedness might be affected by the transfer of
reproductive material. A decrease or even a loss of
adaptedness to local conditions at the plantation site is frequently assumed to result from a change from
autochthonous to allochthonous populations (Schoppa
and Gregorius, 2001). However, the idea of a generally
superior adaptedness of autochthonous populations as
compared to allochthonous material might be oversimplified
since it does not take into account unpredictable
and random events in the evolutionary past of
populations (Ma´tya´s, 2001). Results from numerous
provenance trials show that the local, autochthonous
provenance is frequently not the provenance exhibiting
optimum adaptation to the planting site
