We are not aware of trials comparing the effect of opening some versus all loculations. For small lesions (i.e., <2 cm) suggestive of an abscess, such as those that have central induration and pointing but are not clearly fluctuant, one acceptable treatment option is the application of local heat with close follow-up. Systemic antibiotics should be given to patients with systemic signs of infection.
