Saliva
Unstimulated whole saliva samples were collected
over a 2-minute interval and transferred into a vial
using a plastic straw. Participants rested in a seated
position for several minutes. They were then asked
to empty their oral cavity by swallowing. Participants
then collected their saliva in the oral cavity for 2 minutes
prior to evacuating the oral cavity into a small vial
using a straw. Saliva samples were taken 30 and 0 minutes
before exercise, at minutes 40, 80, and 120 during
the exercise trial, and 30 and 60 minutes after exercise.
Prior to each collection period, the subjects were asked
to swallow in order to empty the oral cavity. The osmolality
of all samples was measured by freezing point
depression using a Fiske 210 Osmometer (Advanced
Instruments, Inc., Norwood, MA).
