Article Summary : Early infantile autism is a childhood psychosis , apparently inborn, characterized by an inability to others, obsession with sameness or repetition, and impaired language drveiopment. The present study investigated ways to increase the “spontsneous verbalizations” of three autistic children with “moderatemental retardation”(ages 11, 11 and 9) Language use was minimal in all cases. A multiple-baseline across behaviors design was used for each child. Two spontaneous responses (“please” and “thank you” ) and one verbally prompted responses(“you’re welcom”) were the behaviors selected. The procedure consisted of baseline and treatment sessions which took place two afternoons each week in an experimental room. The experimenter sat facing the child across a table ; training periods lasted about 1 hour and consisted of 15 to 25 trials. Each child participated in approximately 50 sessions.
