Japanese summer is very hot and humid. It is hard to get through the day during the intense heat, but there are many summer events to enjoy. One of my favorites is strolling through the yomise (night stalls). They are often seen when a festival is held and offer various food and games. Catching Goldfish with a special net is a popular game often found at the yomise. The net is a thin piece of paper attached to a round frame. The game lasts until the paper breaks from being soaked in the water. Since the paper is easily ripped when wet the game can end quickly, so you don’t have much time to catch a fish. When I was little, I was so happy if I could catch a goldfish, bring it home and release it into a small pond in our yard.
