This paper has outlined a possible solution to the
problem of conceptual dependence, which arises when
domain-specific conceptual models are hardcoded in information
systems. The unwanted consequences of conceptual
dependence include system inflexibility and high maintenance
cost. We have defined conceptual independence, the
absence of coupling between conceptual models and system
structures and logic. We have also outlined a suitable
architecture and data model to implement conceptual
independence in adaptive information systems (AIS).
