To test the RSS, 228 full-time employees completed the scale (see Study I).
Participants were instructed to "think of their latest work-related group" in responding
to the Iikert-type items. The RSS was placed on a range from "Strongly Agree" (5) to
"Strongly Disagree" (1). A principal components factor analysis (varimax rotation) of
the RSS showed that all 12 items loaded most highly on a single factor (eigenvalue = 5.80) and accounted for 48.3% of the variance (see Table 1). Thus, the scale resulting
from this single factor was taken as a unidimensional measure (McCroskey & Young,
1979). Cronbach's alpha for the RSS was .89 (M = 43.91, SD = 6.89). The following
studies offer support for the reliability, validity, and usefulness of the RSS.
