For centuries, powdered rhizome of turmeric or ‘Khamin-Chan’ in Thai has been applied to skin to propose smooth, moist and light skin appearance. The visible improvement of skin raises the question about the action of the components contained in the turmeric’s rhizomes. Several studies have revealed that the active constituents of the turmeric’s rhizome are curcuminoids including curcumin (70–75%), demethoxycurcumin (15– 20%) and bis-demethoxycurcumin (3%). Curcumin has been reported to be an active compound with powerful antioxidant to repair both oxidative and reductive damage caused to proteins by radiation. Besides its antioxidative activity, there have been reported anti-inflammatory and anti-tyrosinase activities of curcumin.
