Catholicism in Canada was especially associated with the province of Quebec and the French Canadians living there, whose clergy were strong proponents of the most conservative faction of the church well into the 20 century. This fundamentalism sparked an entire history of fear and suspicion among non-believers and led to a lot of anti-Catholic sentiment in Canada. In fact, until quite recently it was very unusual for Canadian Catholics to marry non-Catholics or for children to attend non-Catholic schools.
