Lesson SEN 15
Task: Stack blocks.
Prerequisites: SEN 13
Concept: Many test measures attempt to assess this skill. Unto itself, beyond any personal pleasure the student may achieve by performing this task, it has little direct educational meaning. The real objective is to develop better fine-motor skills that can be later employed by the student for functional purposes. The level chosen for this sample lesson and objective is the stacking of five blocks. Modifications may be needed based on the student's abilities and desires. The texture choice for the blocks (rough or smooth) can make a difference in the success of this activity. Different styles and surfaces should be tried to determine a type that the student can most easily grasp but also easily stack.
Behavioral Objective: When presented with five blocks approximately 112⁄ inches square and requested to "please stack" those blocks, the student will stack all of them in a manner such that they do not fall over to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Wooden or plastic blocks, preferably of bright colors.
Task Analysis:
1. Introduce the student to two of the blocks referenced in the materials section. Physically guide the student through the process of stacking just those two blocks.
2. Continue Step 1, reducing physical guidance until only verbal requests are needed.
3. Continue the concept of Steps 1 and 2, gradually adding blocks until a total of five blocks are stacked. Continue until the objective is met.
