The following variables were found to significantly influence early childhood educators' efforts to promote language and literacy activities in their centers: availability of children's books and other print materials at the center (β = .52, p < .001); perceived adequacy of basic literacy skills training (i.e., confidence that the educator has received adequate training related to teaching children basic literacy skills) (β = .36, p < .001); and the number of children cared for by the early childhood educator (β = .17, p < .01).
