Generally, SAT scores are available only for students who graduated from a U.S.
high school and then matriculated directly into GSU. Thus, SAT scores are often not
available for graduates of foreign high schools or for transfer students from other U.S.
colleges or universities. Two hundred is the lowest score that can be reported on SAT.
According to the GSU (1991) General Catalog, freshman applicants were required to
have minimum SAT scores of 400 verbal and 400 mathematics along with an overall C
average on “all academic coursework attempted” (p. 20). In special conditions involving
various other factors listed in the catalog, freshman applicants with lower SAT scores
could be admitted to the Division of Developmental Studies. For NNS students, courses
in ESL could be substituted for the English-language courses in Developmental Studies.
Because of concerns about the cultural appropriateness of the verbal portion of the
SAT, an in-house policy in the GSU Admissions Office allowed NNS and international
students to substitute a locally developed ESL test for the verbal SAT, however, these
students were still required to meet the mathematics requirement.
