operati ng a Co mmunity-Sup ported Agricult ure (CS A) farm
in east ern Iowa and addresses the concept of comm unity
among growers. Popula r depi ctions of local foods system s
often emp hasize the cl ose relationships that d evelop between
producers and consu mers. This picture, how ever, may glos s
over the nece ssary compl exities of a heal thy local food sys
tem. CSA has been promoted as a direct market ing strateg y
for small-sca le g rower s and tout ed as a way of developing
positiv e relationships betwe en prod ucers and consume rs.
Nevert heless, it is also importan t to und erstand that suc
cessful CSA initiatives are often reliant on a broad network
of suppor t that include s more than just growers and eaters.
Ethnogr aphic descripti ons of CSA farms presented here
show how involvem ent by med ia and other organizations
contri bute to succes sful CSAs as well as an overall concept
of ‘‘civic agricul ture.’’ These description s also show that
acces s to afford able, reliable labor tends to be among the
